It’s not a concert, and it’s not a class. It’s a one of a kind musical experience for thousands of kids in Ventura County.
At a time when many school districts in Ventura County don’t have money or staff for music programs, a Conejo Valley based orchestra is trying to help fill the gap.
The New West Symphony has teamed up with Carnegie Hall for a program called “Symphonic Adventures 2018-The Orchestra Sings.”
The program helps educators without prior experience in music to learn how to teach the basics, while also providing class materials.
Nearly five thousand third, fourth, and fifth graders from 15 Ventura County school districts are in the program.
The big end to what the kids have been learning in their classroom is the chance to go to one of four New West Symphony programs in Thousand Oaks, and Oxnard.
The programs give kids a chance to sing along. And, during the course of the classroom program, many of the students got the chance to learn how to play recorders, which they then brought along to accompany the orchestra.
The organizers of this program say they hope this introduction to classical music will encourage them to make it a part of their lives forever.
