Unemployment Rises on South and Central Coasts

Things are looking a little dim when it comes to the job market on the South and Central Coasts.

The California Employment Development Department has released numbers showing that the unemployment rates for Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties are up while the state’s jobless numbers are down.

In Ventura County, the unemployment rate was 5.1% in January, climbing from 4.8% in December. The percentage of those out of work in Santa Barbara County was 5.9% in January, which is a 0.5% increase from the month before. And, the jobless rate in San Luis Obispo County was 4.2% in January, a jump from 3.9% in December.

However, the state unemployment rate in January of 5.1% percent fell 0.1% percent from December, and it’s the lowest jobless rate since April 2007.
