Teens Volunteer At Bike Drive In Conejo Valley To Help Those In Need In Africa

Wheels to Africa bike drive at Westlake High School in Westlake Village

Teenagers in the Conejo Valley are volunteering at a bike drive this weekend that benefits those in need in Africa -- mostly children.

On Saturday, the teens and other volunteers collected about 250 bicycles, as well as helmets, wheelchairs and crutches at Westlake High School in Westlake Village and Viewpoint High School in Calabasas for the nonprofit, Wheels to Africa.

Using hammers and wrenches, they removed the pedals and adjusted the handlebars so that the bikes can fit in a container that will be shipped to Zanzibar in Tanzania and will be distributed to orphanages, schools and villages.

"Especially living in this affluent community, I think we have a responsibility to help those in need that don't have the opportunities and access to resources that we do.  I think it's a really amazing cause and we need to all dig dip and give back," said 16-year-old Ruby Sirota-Foster, a Westlake High sophomore, who felt compelled to help.

The Wheels to Africa bike drive continues on Sunday from 10 am to 3 pm at Newbury Park High School.
