South Coast School District Considering Cancellation Of Open Classroom Program; Low Enrollment Cited

A unique open classroom project on the South Coast which dates back decades may be coming to an end. Tuesday night, the Ventura School Board is set to consider cancelling the kindergarten through fifth grade program.

District officials are recommending shutting down the experiential learning program because of low enrollment. A staff report says there are 28 students in the program now. But, it says there are 18 projected for next year, with seven of them outside of the district transfer students.

District officials say the move should come now to give families time to find other schools for next school year. They note there are magnet schools which provide alternatives which didn’t exist in past.

But, some parents are asking district trustees to save the Open Classroom program, saying it provides a unique educational option.
