South Coast Food Bank Aims To Increase Participation Among Kids Deterred By Immigration Fears

The Santa Barbara County Food Bank new outreach effort involves pre-made meals delivered directly to children's recreation areas.

Julia Lara with the Food Bank says that some of the children were afraid of immigration issues, and were not participating, so now the Food Bank is preparing meals and reaching children at the places where they play.

"We're trying to ensure that fear wasn't in the way of an individual receiving a nutritious meal that they need over the summer," says Lara.

The Food Bank noticed the decline in child participation right away, says Lara: "about four weeks into our program we noticed the decline."

The healthy meals are prepared daily, placed into small containers, and handed out on the spot to the kids.

Andy worked at KCLU from 2016 until 2022.
