A Santa Barbara congressman is co-author of a new bipartisan bill intended to legally allow guns to be taken away from people facing a mental health crisis. The “Extreme Risk Protection Order Act” would allow family members, or law enforcement authorities to ask a judge to issue orders to temporarily take weapons from people who might pose a risk to themselves, or others.
It would also prevent people in extreme duress from being able to buy a gun.
Democratic Congressman Salud Carbajal of Santa Barbara teamed up with three other congressmen to introduce the bill in the House of Representatives.
U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein of California is introducing a companion Senate version of the bill.
