South Coast Business Featured In Film For Staying Open During Montecito Mudflow

The UC Santa Barbara film department is preparing a movie about resiliency in communities, and a Montecito business is part of the story.

Filming took place at The Village Cheese and Wine restaurant on Monday.

Sheriff Bill Brown was among those interviewed. He said the business stayed open during the 2018 Montecito Debris Flow, and fed first responders when other businesses were cut off or closed.

The owner said that he was able to get access to his business, make sandwiches for the first responders, and feed residents who hadn't evacuated the area.

He also got supplies in and kept the food coming when other places were closed.

The student film is being prepared on the heels of another movie that was made about the disaster, and which was shown at last year's Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Among those interviewed were members of the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Department, the Montecito Fire Department, and the California Highway Patrol.

Andy worked at KCLU from 2016 until 2022.
