There was a rash of threats reported at schools around the country on Friday in the wake of the Florida shooting, but one led to an arrest on the South Coast.
Deputies responded to a threat of violence involving a firearm that they say was made by a Carpinteria Middle School student. School staff reported that the threat came from a 13-year-old boy on-campus and was overheard by his fellow students.
Authorities arrested the student on a charge of making criminal threats, and he was booked into Santa Maria Juvenile Hall. Deputies searched his home and found no operable firearms.
Next week, there will be increased patrols at all Carpinteria schools.
There were also concerns about possible threats at high schools in Westlake Village and Lompoc on Friday, but authorities determined in both cases they were not credible.
