Shakespeare With A Sitcom Twist Comes To The South Coast

The Kingsman Sheakespeare Company production of "The Merry Wives of Windsor" gives a 60's sitcom feel to the classic. It runs through July 14th on the Cal Lutheran Campus in Thousand Oaks

One of Shakespeare’s comedic classics is being presented on the South Coast with an even lighter twist. The new Kingsmen Shakespeare Company production of “The Merry Wives of Windsor” is being done with the feel of a 1960’s era TV sitcom.

Director Kevin Kern says the storyline is perfect for the sitcom twist. While the dialogue is the same, the 60’s costumes, and sitcom style music give it a very non-traditional feel.

Kingsmen veteran Ted Barton plays Falstaff, and says he enjoys the many twists theater companies bring to Shakespeare’s classics.

Kern says he hopes they’ve created something which will attract not just Shakespeare lovers, but non-traditional audiences just looking for a fun evening: “Merry Wives of Windsor” kicks off the Kingsmen Shakespeare Company’s 23rd season.

It’s presented under the stars in Kingsmen Park, on the California Lutheran University campus in Thousand Oaks. The professional theater company operates under the umbrella of the university. “Merry Wives” opens June 28th, and runs Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through July 14th.
