A second case of Zika virus has been discovered in Santa Barbara County.
The Santa Barbara County Health Department says a female who wasn’t pregnant contracted the virus, which can cause birth defects. County Health officials say both cases discovered so far are related to people who traveled to areas of the world where Zika is an issue.
The county has received more than 90 specimens so far for Zika virus testing. It’s expected that with healthcare providers following federal recommendations for testing of people traveling to high risk areas of the world, the local number of confirmed cases will increase.
So far, the type of mosquitoes which can transmit Zika have not been detected on the Central or South Coasts.
