Search Warrants Served in Connection With 1996 Disappearance Of Central Coast College Student

There have been some new developments in the investigation into the more than two decade old disappearance of a Central Coast college student. In May of 1996, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student Kristin Smart disappeared after leaving a party. The 19 year old freshman from Stockton was never seen again.

Detectives pursued countless leads, but never had enough evidence to make an arrest. In January, they served search warrants to seize two vehicles owned by the family of one of Smart’s classmates at the time.

This week, the detectives working with other law enforcement agencies served search warrants at four locations. They aren’t releasing specifics on the locations, or what they were looking for, but two warrants were in San Luis Obispo County, one in Los Angeles County, and one in Washington State.

Sheriff’s office officials say the investigation is active, but that they won’t be releasing any further information at this time.
