May 16, 2019

The pilot of a light plane is dead after a plane crash in the Santa Barbara County mountains,

Pierre Josefsohn left Santa Ynez Airport for what was supposed to be a short flight Wednesday afternoon.  Whem he didn't return home, family members notified the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's office.

A tracking beacon on the plane indicated the plane was in the mountains off Figueroa Mountain Road.  Fog and clouds grounded an aerial search Wednesday night.  Thursday morning, the Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team was deployed, as was a county helicopter.

The wreckage of the plane was spotted on a steep mountainside known as Goat Rock.  Search and Rescue Team members rappelled down to the scene using ropes, and the body of the 68 year old Solvang man was recovered and lifted out by helicopter.  Federal investigators are trying to determine what led to the crash.
