A man who’s led education efforts on the Central and South Coast for more than three decades is retiring.
Bill Cirone announced he’s stepping down this summer as Santa Barbara County’s Superintendent of Schools.
Cirone is the state’s longest running county schools leader, serving 34 years in the position. He was first elected in 1982. The county’s Board of Education appointed Deputy Superintendent Susan Salcido to fill the remainder of Cirone’s term.
Cirone has been an educator for more than a half century, starting as a teacher in Harlem. He’s known for his education advocacy efforts, reaching out into the community to try to strengthen programs in schools.
