Santa Barbara County Reaches Settlement With Oil Company Over Small Spill

Santa Barbara County prosecutors say they've reached a settlement with an oil company over a small chemical spill.

Prosecutors claim in March of 2018, about 400 gallons of hydrochloric acid was accidentally released at Exxon's Los Flores Canyon oil processing facility.  They say the company called 911, but failed to report the incident to state officials as required.

The spill was cleaned up safely, but officials with the DA's office say the state wasn't brought into the information loop on what happened for more than a week.

Exxon cooperated with the District Attorney's Office to reach a settlement.  The deal calls for the company to pay $4,000 to cover the DA's costs, as well as a $2,000 civil penalty.  There is also an injunction in place for it to follow state spill reporting guidelines.
