Popular Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area Trail Damaged By Woolsey Fire Fully Reopened

A popular South Coast trail has completely reopened eight months after it was hit hard by the massive Woolsey brush fire. The nearly 100,000 acre blaze last November killed three people and destroyed more than 1600 structures. It also damaged parts of the 67 mile long Backbone Trail in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation area.

Parts of the trail from Kanan Road to Corral Canyon were especially hard hit by the fire. The trail was reopened in sections, with the last shut down portion reopening this week.

The Woolsey Fire burned 88% of the National Park Service land in the National Recreation Area.
