Police At Two Central, South Coast Universities Pledge Not To Use Controversial Choke Hold

The police departments at two universities on the Central and South Coasts have joined in a statewide pledge not to use a controversial choke hold.

The police chiefs at all 23 campuses in the Cal State University system have pledged that their departments will not use carotid control holds.  The action is a response to the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police.

The pledge involving the Cal State Channel Islands and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo police departments also says their officers won’t be trained in the use of the holds.

Cal State Channel Islands Police Chief Michael Morris says they are already doing things to increase the transparency of their operations, including the use of body cameras and the posting of police incidents and calls online.
