Police Say Man Armed With Machete Safely Arrested After Two Hour Standoff On South Coast

Police dealt with a big drama on the South Coast Monday morning, with officers saying a man armed with a machete led them on a car chase followed by a standoff with a SWAT team. Oxnard Police were called to the 500 block of Sherwood Way at about three a.m. for a domestic disturbance call.

Officers say when they arrived, Francisco Camarena jumped in a car and led them on a chase which ended on the 1500 block of South Oxnard Boulevard. They say the 52 year old man refused to get out of his car, and had a machete with him. Negotiators tried for two hours to get him to surrender.

When that failed, the SWAT team used pepper spray, gas, and a K-9 to capture Camarena. After being treated at a hospital for minor injuries, he was arrested on multiple charges ranging from obstructing police to felony evading.
