Plane Headed To Central Coast Crashes; Two Dead

A light plane crashed just after takeoff from Van Nuys Airport Friday, killing two people. FAA officials say the plane was headed to the Santa Ynez Airport.

A light plane headed to the Central Coast from the San Fernando Valley crashed Friday afternoon, killing two people.

The plane had just taken off from Van Nuys Airport just after 3 p.m. when it went down on a street in an industrial area.  Witnesses say the plane was climbing when it appeared to stall, and then dove into the ground.

The plane exploded when it hit the ground, and caught on the fire.  The aircraft was completely destroyed, with the pilot and a passenger killed instantly.  There's no word on the identification of the two people on board.

An FAA official says the plane was headed to Santa Ynez Airport.  The cause of the crash is under investigation.
