What started as a routine investigation of a stopped car in Ventura County tuned into a dangerous standoff with a parolee, who appeared to be armed with a handgun.
It happened just before six a.m. Wednesday, near the intersection of Fruitvale Avenue and Broadway Road in Moorpark.
A Ventura County Sheriff’s deputy who stopped to investigate a car stopped at the intersection recognized a parolee in the vehicle.
The deputy says as he called for backup, the parolee, Dean Aguilar said that he had a gun, and was going to shoot the officer.
The deputy took cover behind his patrol car. Aguilar’s vehicle then sped away, going about a mile before getting stuck on a dirt road.
Deputies arrived to find Aguilar armed with what appeared to be a gun, but a K-9 was able to subdue the Moorpark man.
The weapon turned out to be a BB gun which looked like a real pistol.
Aguilar was arrested on charges ranging from criminal threats to resisting arrest, while his female companion who drove the car was arrested on resisting arrest and drug charges.
