One person is dead following a plane crash on the South Coast which left beachgoers who witnessed it stunned.
A light plane went down just before noon Thursday between Ventura and Santa Barbara, near Solimar Beach. Eyewitnesses say they saw parts of a plane falling from the sky.
Ventura County Fire Captain Steve Swindle says some witnesses thought two aircraft had collided, prompting a search in nearby hills, but it failed to turn up any sign of a second plane or helicopter. The body of one person was recovered from the plane’s wreckage.
The name of the victim hasn’t been released. National Transportation Safety Board investigators are trying to determine what led to the crash.
