Officials Try To Discourage Summer Swimmers From Jumping Off Piers On South Coast

What could be considered summertime fun for some people could get them in hot water.

That activity? Jumping off piers.

At Santa Barbara's Stearns Wharf, people have been known to take a dive.

Harbor Patrol Officer Rick Hubbards say that not only is that dangerous, it is against the law.

"You could have someone kayaking under the wharf... there is debris from some of the older wooden piles that we have out here, and some of the areas can be really shallow."

Most local piers have the same ordinances, and signs are posted at the Ventura and Pismo Pier.

In Santa Barbara officials first give a warning, then a citation.
