There was a celebration this weekend on the South Coast with the grand opening of a new school.
Elm Street School in Oxnard, which serves kindergarten through fifth grade, was completely rebuilt on the original campus.
"I am very happy and very excited for my kids. They couldn't wait for the grand opening. Very excited for our community. I think it was about time. Elm School was a very old building," says Esermeralda Ruiz, who has two kids who go to the school.
The project includes a two-story classroom wing, kindergarten classrooms, a library and administration offices. The school is designed to support 360-degree learning environments with floor-to-ceiling whiteboards and multiple high-definition monitors.
Demolition of the original school is underway and the site will become play fields scheduled to open this June.
Elm Elementary is the third school in the Oxnard School District to undergo reconstruction in recent years.
