Mid-State Fair Cancels Poultry Shows Over Newcastle Disease Outbreak

A Central Coast fair is the latest to cancel its poultry shows in the wake of a disease outbreak. San Luis Obispo County’s Mid-State Fair announced its Youth Poultry Shows will not take place as originally planned at this summer’s event.

Virulent Newcastle Disease has led to more than a million birds being euthanized around the state. There’s a quarantine in effect in Southern California. It’s not harmful to people, but is highly contagious among poultry.

The Ventura County Fair already cancelled its poultry shows, as have many fairs around the state. Officials with the fairs say they want to do it early so kids won’t get poultry to take part in the competition, and then be disappointed.
