Message To 16,000 Parcel Owners In Ventura County; Clear Brush, With Fire Season Expected To Be Bad

Ventura home destroyed by Thomas Fire

More than 16,000 notices are in the mail for home and property owners in Ventura County telling them it’s time to clear brush in potentially high risk brush fire areas.

Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen says despite some significant rainfall, the brush fire danger is expected to be extremely high this year.

The concern is punctuated by last December’s 280,000 acre plus Thomas Brush Fire. The fire, and resulting debris flows led to more than 1400 structures being destroyed or damaged. People have until June 1st to clear brush from around their structures.

A 100 foot clearance is required. Ventura County can do the work and bill property owners who don’t act, but firefighters say voluntary compliance is usually in the high 90% range.
