The lack of rain in combination with stress on trees in the Montecito Fire District is creating more issues than just a fire danger.
Officials say the trees are weakened and in some cases just falling down.
That causes road closures, utility line damage and in some cases breaking water systems.
Inspections have been made regularly and even the hardiest trees, such as eucalyptus, are starting do die.
Trees impacted by the drought are also low on producing sap that holds off pests like the invasive bark beetles.
The Fire District is asking homeowners to remove dead trees within 100 feet of their homes or any tree that could block a road or damage utilities.
They also say even with the return of rain it will take time for the trees to become healthy again.
