Author Ken McAlpine of Ventura with his book about the Channel Islands

Ken McAlpine of Ventura is reading an excerpt from his book, Islands Apart: A Year on the Edge of Civilization. He describes what it was like for him to camp for a week in solitude on each of the five islands within Channel Islands National Park.

“They’re spectacularly beautiful," he said. "They’re this incredible gem right in our backyard.”

He said one of his favorite islands is San Miguel, where he was in awe over an amazing sight.

“Thousands and thousands and thousands of these seals and sea lions," he said. "And, just life. Just burgeoning, bursting, honking, squawking life.”

McAlpine will be speaking this Thursday at 7 pm at the Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center at Ventura Harbor as part of The From Shore to Sea lecture series. It’s free and open to the public.
