KCLU Honored By AP For News Coverage

KCLU's Lance Orozco and Debra Greene at 2016 APTRA Awards

KCLU was honored by the Associated Press with four regional awards for news reporting, including the award for “Best Live News Coverage” for coverage of Ventura County’s 2015 Solimar brush fire.

News Director Lance Orozco and weekend anchor Debra Greene received the honor for their coverage of the fire last December 26th, which closed Highway 101 and threatened homes before it was contained.

The APTRA awards were presented Saturday night (6/11) at the Universal Hilton in Universal City. Broadcast newsrooms in 12 western states from Hawaii to Colorado took part in the competition. KCLU is in Division B, the category for stations with five or fewer news staff members.

Orozco also won the Division B award for “Best Radio Station Website”; and Best Radio Sports Reporting for a story about the Cowboys and Rams training together in Ventura County last summer. And, for the 10th time Orozco won the AP’s “Pat Davis Reporter of the Year” award for best small market news reporter.
