A classic wooden flag pole at Santa Barbara Junior High has been cut down by the school district, after vandals attempted to cut it down themselves with a hacksaw.
Historians believe the flag pole may have been on the property since the 1930s, when the school first opened.
An eyewitness saw two people at the location Sunday night, who ran after being spotted.
Police arrived and detained one of the suspects nearby. The person believed to be responsible is a school district employee.
The fire department and the school district assessed the damage to the pole and determined the best course of action was to remove it.
A crew cut the pole off about five feet above from the ground at around 10 Sunday night.
