A man is recovering from smoke inhalation after a water heater he was working on sparked a fire in a two story building on the South Coast.

Santa Barbara firefighters were called to the 400 block of North Milpas Street just after 9 a.m. Monday by reports of a fire. They discovered smoke coming from a home located above a liquor store.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze.

The injured man told them he had been repairing a water heater. He thought the gas was off, but it wasn’t, and fumes were ignited by a pilot light.
