A coalition of conservation groups sued the federal government to try to block the federal government’s plans to allow oil drilling, and fracking on more than a million acres of public land in the state. The Trump Administration plan would allow oil drilling, and fracking on Bureau of Land Management administered land in eight counties, includes Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties.
Fracking would also be allowed in 11 counties. It’s a process in which chemicals and water are injected into the ground to try to clear a way to oil deposits.
A lawsuit filed by the groups asserts the BLM is violating federal law by failing to consider the potential environmental impacts of fracking. It contends it could potentially harm people, animals, and the environment in general.
Among the groups taking part in the lawsuit are Los Padres ForestWatch, The Sierra Club and The Wilderness Society.
