Off-Duty Oxnard Police Officer Dies In Tragic Traffic Accident

There's shock on the South Coast over a traffic accident which took the life of an off-duty Oxnard Police officer.

Officer Nathan Martin had just left the police station after work Wednesday afternoon when he apparently headed eastbound on Third Street on his motorcycle.  Investigators say a big rig made a left turn in front of him, near Campton Drive, and the officer collided with it.

He was taken to the Ventura County Medical Center, but efforts to save him were unsuccessful.

Martin had been with the department for 20 years.  The 45 year old served the department in a number of capacities, and was currently the School Resource Officer at Hueneme High School.  Grief counselors will be on hand at the school Thursday.

The CHP is handling the investigation into the accident.  Martin is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
