Coronavirus Doesn't Stop Work On New Military Laser Testing Facility On South Coast

May 8, 2020

Coronavirus has disrupted many aspects of our lives, but it isn’t stopping work on a new military facility on the South Coast.

Work got underway this week on the construction of a new laser weapon system test facility at Naval Base Ventura County.

The 18,000-square-foot lab will be the Navy’s only center for testing, firing, and evaluating the technology.

The Directed Energy Systems Integration Laboratory will be able to take advantage of the 36,000-square-mile military test range in the ocean off the coast.

The Ventura County facility will help assess questions involving how ocean conditions like moisture, humidity, salt, and fog might affect laser performance.

The operators will also be able to conduct actual tests on targets. It’s expected the facility will be up and operational by mid-2021.
