Controversy Over Chants At High School Basketball Game On Central Coast

There’s controversy on the Central Coast over an incident involving a high school basketball game. Righetti High School was playing St. Joseph’s in Santa Maria Tuesday night. At the end of the game, a video that’s gone viral shows some Righetti students chanting “Where’s Your Passport” at the St. Joseph’s team.

Some have raised questions over whether the incident was racist. Others say it may be more about the perception that St. Joseph’s recruited players, because one of them on the roster is from France, and three others are from Puerto Rico.

St. Joseph’s is a private Catholic school. The Santa Maria Union High School District released a statement saying officials are aware of what it called “unacceptable” comments exchanged during the game, and that the situation is being addressed.
