An experimental program on the Central Coast intended to reduce panhandling by setting up donation stations for people who want to help is getting ready to present its second check to a social service agency.
The “Make Change Count” program in downtown San Luis Obispo uses specially marked parking meters as easy ways for people to make contributions to help those in need. The idea is that people put money in the machines if they want to help, rather than giving it to panhandlers.
The pilot program began in April of 2014. It raised more than $8500 dollars during its first six month in operation. Tomorrow, organizers will present $2800 more to the Friends of Prado social services group. The city is now looking at making the “Making Change Count” pilot program permanent.
