Central Coast Students Become First High School Team Competing In National Drag Race

A group of students on the Central Coast are racing into the history books as the first high school team to compete in a National Hot Rod Association drag race.

The Santa Maria High School Race Team was in Pomona on Thursday and Friday competing against pro racing teams in the NHRA’s Winternationals event.

Although they didn’t qualify for the Saturday races, 15 year old crew member Blake Almaguer says that even being on the raceway was an intense experience.

“It’s really nerve-wracking,” Almaguer says. “Every time we get up there I’m holding my breath, waiting, trying to see if we can pull through and get the win. Unfortunately today we didn’t, but I was still holding my breath, trying to hope for the best.”

Andy worked at KCLU from 2016 until 2022.
