Central Coast City Lays Off More Than 90 Part-Time Workers

A Central Coast City has announced it’s laying off more than half of its part time employees.

The City of Santa Maria notified 93 of what it calls “limited service” workers that there is nothing for them to do, and that they should apply for unemployment.

The employees worked for agencies like the Recreation and Parks Department, and the city’s libraries.

City officials say with many facilities closed and programs cancelled due to coronavirus concerns, they don’t have anything for part-time workers to do.

The city has a total of 160 part time positions which range from four to 19 hours a week.

Santa Maria city officials also say they’ve put a hiring freeze in place in anticipation of a huge blow to the city’s finances as a result of the coronavirus crisis.
