Brush Fire Flares Up On Central Coast, But Firefighters Quickly Get Upper Hand

(Santa Barbara County Fire Department photo by Mike Eliason)
A brush fire burned just under 20 acres of land on the Central Coast Wednesday afternoon

A brush fire burned just under 20 acres of land on the Central Coast. The blaze was discovered in a rural area southeast of Lompoc at around one Wednesday afternoon. The fire was in the Sweeney Road area. It destroyed a vehicle and an outbuilding, but no homes were damaged.

The fire’s spread was stopped in about two hours. Final mapping puts the size of the fire at 17 acres. Some aircraft were used to fight the blaze, but they had to be grounded after a drone was seeing flying in the area. Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies are trying to find the drone’s pilot, because flying them in an active firefighting area is illegal.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
