A brush fire continues to burn out of control in the Channel Islands.
The fire has burned 250 acres of land on Santa Cruz Island. It’s being called the Santa Cruz Fire, and it’s prompted the evacuation of about 50 researchers, and staff members from the island.
The island has also been closed to visitors. The fire broke out Tuesday afternoon. A pile of debris that was part of a prescribed burn flared up, and spread to nearby brush.
The blaze is burning in rugged terrain near the island’s Nature Conservancy Ranch. Three air tankers and more than 50 firefighters are battling the blaze, with more crews on the way. No structures have been damaged.
There’s no estimate yet of when the blaze will be contained, but firefighters say they were able to keep it from growing Wednesday.
