Authorities Investigate Jail Inmate Death On South Coast

Authorities on the South Coast are investigating the death of a jail inmate.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office says on Friday around 6 pm, 62-year-old Eduardo Rodriguez told a deputy at the County's Main Jail that he wasn’t feeling well.

The deputy called for jail medical staff, but the inmate’s condition worsened and he became unresponsive.  Deputies began CPR until the paramedics arrived.  But Rodriguez did not repond to lifesaving efforts.  He was pronounced dead at about 6:40 pm.

Sheriff’s officials say while the death appears to be due to natural causes, the Coroner’s Office is conducting an investigation.

Rodriguez, a Santa Barbara transient, had been in custody since Wednesday. Authorities say he was being held without bail for failing to register as a sex offender, a violation of his probation.
