Art And Music Combine For One Of A Kind Installation At South Coast Museum

It’s art and music rolled up in one. A new multimedia installation at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art is a communal, one of a kind bell ringing instrument, designed for eight people to play together. Chris Kallmyer is a Los Angeles based sound and performance artist who created the work, which is called “Ensemble.”

It’s a giant wooden A frame structure, with bells hanging underneath. Kallmeyer says visitors taking part in docent led experiences during the work’s four month run can actually help create music.

"Ensemble" opens to the public on Sunday. The museum is hosting a museum Free Day from 1-4 p.m. Kallmyer will stage a special performance with guest artists during the 1-4 period.
