Mountain lion P-55, which died recently

A mountain lion known for accomplishing the rare feat of safely crossing the 101 Freeway twice in the Santa Monica Mountains area has died.

National Park Service officials say P-55 's remains were recovered by biologists, but were so badly decomposed it was impossible to determine the cause of death.

Researchers had been tracking the three year old male mountain lion, but the radio collar failed to alert them that the big cat had died. The mountain lion had been living in the northwestern end of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

He made news in February when he was photographed peering through the sliding glass door of a home in Westlake Village.
