Man Enters Insanity Plea To Ventura County Jail Killing

A man is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity for killing a fellow Ventura County Jail inmate.

It happened in October of 2018, at the Ventura County Jail’s Pre-Trial Detention facility.  Prosecutors say Vu Cong Dao beat and strangled Michael Torres.

Dao was in jail on a commercial burglary charge.  Torres was behind bars over domestic abuse allegations.  Prosecutors aren’t saying why they think the 37-year-old Palmdale man killed Torres.

Dao had been charged with voluntary manslaughter.  Because of his insanity plea, the case is an admission of guilt, and now moves to trial to determine his sanity at the time of the killing.
