Brush Fire In Five Cities Area Grows To 300 Acres; Shuts Down Highway 101

A brush fire is burning in the Avila and Pismo Beach areas Monday night

A brush fire has closed a section of Highway 101 on the Central Coast, and has threatened some homes.

The fire started just before 4 p.m. Monday in the Avila Beach area.  It sent huge plumes of smoke into the sky as it jumped Highway 101, and moved towards the Pismo Preserve.  Firefighters on the ground have been aided by air tankers in battling the fast moving blaze.

Cal Fire officials say the parking lot of a Wal-Mart in Arroyo Grande is being used as an evacuation site.  There's no word of any structures being destroyed, or damaged.
