Agricultural Pesticide Alternative Focus Of Public Event On South Coast

California is in the process of phasing out the use of a controversial pesticide which many people contend poses a health hazard. Tuesday night, a group of experts is meeting on the South Coast to hear the public’s ideas on alternatives to the use of chlorpyrifos.

The California Department of Pesticide Regulation, and the California Department of Food and Agriculture are holding the event at the South Oxnard Senior Center, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The working group is holding a series of meetings around the state as it tries to identify, evaluate, and recommend alternatives to the pesticide, which will be phased out of most agricultural uses by the end of the year.

As part of the process, $1 million in grants will be made available to expand outreach about biologically systems which can provide alternatives to pesticides.
