Coast Guard Rescues Stranded Boater By Helicopter After Craft Runs Aground

A sailboat ran aground on Santa Cruz Island Monday. A boater onboard had to be rescued by helicopter

Coast Guard rescue teams had to use a helicopter to rescue a man from a sailboat which ran aground in the Channel Islands during rough seas.

The man was on board a boat anchored off of Santa Cruz Island early Monday morning.  He sent out a distress call after the craft apparently started dragging its anchor towards shore in rough seas.

A Coast Guard rescue boat reached the scene, but rough seas broke the sailboat's anchor line, sending it aground in a cove.  It was too dangerous for the rescue boat to enter.

A Coast Guard helicopter out of Point Mugu then airlifted the man off the sailboat.  He was uninjured.
