New Ban Now In Effect On Plastic Straws In South Coast City; Plastic Cutlery Also Impacted

A South Coast city’s new ordinance which tries to reduce the use of single-use plastics is now in effect. Santa Barbara’s new ordinance bans food and beverage vendors from distributing plastic straws, with certain exceptions. For instance, people with disabilities will still be allowed to receive plastic straws.

Paper straws can be made available by food and beverage vendors to customers by request.

The ordinance also requires that plastic cutlery be on demand, and not automatically be distributed. However, people will still be able to go into stores and buy plastic straws or cutlery for their personal use.

The ordinance took effect July 1st.
