Ventura County Man Convicted Of Killing Stepson Over What Prosecutors Say Was Dispute Over Chores

A jury has found a Ventura County man guilty of stabbing his stepson to death over what prosecutors say was a dispute over the victim not doing his chores. It happened in August of 2016, at the home where both men lived in Simi Valley. Simi Valley Police detectives say Howard Novack confronted Kelly Hughes about chores, leading to the fatal stabbing of the 38 year old man.

Novak was convicted of voluntary manslaughter with the use of a knife. The 65 year old man contended it was an act of self-defense. Novack faces a potential sentence of up to 12 years in state prison.
