State Senate Passes Bill By Santa Barbara Legislator Which Would Expand Gun Ownership Restrictions

The State Senate passed a bill inspired by the 2014 Isla Vista rampage which would limit gun ownership among people with certain alcohol convictions. SB 55 would restrict gun ownership for people with multiple DUI convictions, and of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

The law would put a ten year ban on ownership for people convicted of those crimes. The legislation was authored by Democratic State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson of Santa Barbara. It’s based on research which shows that people with certain alcohol related convictions are more likely to commit gun violence.

The 2014 rampage left six people dead, and 14 injured.

\SB 55 now goes to the State Assembly for consideration.
