Help, I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up! Santa Barbara Legislator Proposes Legislation To Prevent Falls
Do you know what the leading cause of death is among older Americans? It is falls. Now, a Santa Barbara legislator wants to do more to prevent those types of accidents. SB 280 would help make information available on fall prevention, provide home safety assessments, and fund improvements like grab bars and hand rails.
More than 700,000 people end up in hospitals every year because of falls, with hip and head injuries common. Democratic Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson of Santa Barbara authored the legislation. Jackson says it will ultimately save taxpayers money, because Medicare covers close to 80% of fall injury costs.
