Car which goes off Highway 101 west of Santa Barbara hit by train, but couple in vehicle escapes unhurt

It was a close call for a couple in a car which went off of Highway 101 and rolled onto railroad tracks in Santa Barbara County, and was then hit by an oncoming passenger train.

The car was headed southbound on Highway 101 near Gaviota just after one Wednesday afternoon when the driver lost control. The vehicle rolled down an embankment, and ended up on some railroad tracks.

The two people were able to get out of the wreckage safely, and were standing on the tracks when a northbound Amtrak passenger train came around a curve. The train blew its whistle, the two people scrambled off the tracks, but it was unable to stop before hitting the wreckage of the car.

There were 56 passengers and crew members on board, but no one was hurt. The train track was blocked for much of the afternoon as a result of the accident.
